As comedian Steve Martin puts his St Barts villa up for sale, we look at the enduring appeal of the tiny French territory, where the market is roaring back to life

For about 15 years, between 1975 and 1990, Steve Martin had a reasonable claim to be the funniest man in America. Through the Seventies, his stand-up packed stadiums with the kinds of delirious crowds normally associated with the Rolling Stones or the Eagles. His early material was known for its rambling quality – audiences would not know quite when to laugh. Compared to some of the more traditional funnymen, he was refreshingly edgy.

Then in 1979, he seamlessly rose into the Hollywood aristocracy with his starring role in The Jerk. A run of smash hits followed – titles that bring a smile to the lips of those who remember them – Pennies from Heaven, The Man with Two Brains, All of Me, Roxanne.

He has stayed at – or at least near – the top for more than 40 years. He has worked with practically everyone: Goldie Hawn, Michael Caine, Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams. At the Oscars next year, he will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement award in recognition of the countless hours of merriment he has provided.

Yet like many stars, he has not waited for a prize before rewarding himself with a comfortable foreign crash-pad. At least not if the house he has put up for sale on St Barts is anything to judge by.

Villa Au Soleil, high in the hills above the Caribbean Sea, is a home fit for a superstar if ever there was. It offers 180-degree views of the azure St Jean Baie, including shimmering sunsets. The colonial-style house has four bedrooms, an open-plan living area and a separate dining room for colonial-style dinners. Surrounding the house are a two-tiered infinity pool, several sun terraces, and lush tropical gardens. Practically every room comes with sea views.

“St Barts is one of my favourite places in the world,” says Martin, 68. “Myself and my family have had a fantastic few years at the villa. The views are second to none, and the sun deck, terraces and swimming pool have been a great retreat to come and relax between filming. We will be sad to say goodbye."
